Graded repertoire

Grades in the violin repertoire is a demanding concept. The grades of the musical pieces should not be understood as the difficulty gauges but rather as the levels of technical and musical maturity of the student. The difficulty of the piece does not depend on the grade the piece is, but rather on the technical skills and the level of musicality and musicianship needed for the execution of the piece.

Some skills are inevitably taught earlier than others, for example on the string bowing is taught before off the string strokes or shifting after the first position. At the same time it is impossible to compare the difficulty of individual skills, for example it is impossible to say whether grand détaché is more difficult than spiccato or whether spiccato is more difficult than shifting between the 3rd and 5th positions. On top of that some pieces may not be so difficult technically but require extreme musicality whereas other pieces may be more technically demanding but the level of musicianship required is not so extreme.

Despite their subjectivity, the grades in repertoire are still useful. The students may look at the piece and by comparison with the grades of the pieces they already can play well they may understand whether the piece can be played easily, be a challenge or be totally beyond their level.

Violinwiki

Only the works from the classical violin canon are included, folk songs and typical beginner pieces found in the various methods are not included. Grades are defined by the skills required and musical demands of the works. The difficulty of the work is established by the most difficult place in the piece. The grading is not yet fully completed, some works are listed in the ungraded section. Currently the list does not contain the complete repertoire, just the most frequently played pieces.

The difficulty is on the continuum from the easiest to the most difficult:

  • elementary
  • very easy
  • easy
  • moderately difficult
  • difficult
  • very difficult
  • extremely difficult
  • professional

and the number of steps is arbitrary, the difficulty levels morph into each other at each end of the step.
